[Being on guard duty for the sword shrine is usually boring. Not one normally tries to break into it because 1) it's nigh impossible anyway and 2) being inside is admittedly a lot more dangerous than being outside and no one who has managed to actually get into the inner part has come out. So really, most people leave it alone.
But it is an ancestral grave, so it is still guarded. And because it is an ancestral grave, it means Huaisang gets to take shifts there because beside her brother she is one of the few who can actually move around here mostly safely due to being able to use the runes and passwords.
But also that means uninterrupted reading time, which is always good if you don't mind reading in a dark place by candlelight.
So when the runes actually sound the alarm, Huaisang actually curses. Who here is coming to disturb her me time?
She gets up, brushes the dirt off her clothing, and brushes her fingers against the closest stone beast.]
Where?
[A small ball of light comes out of the beast statue's mouth and she follows it. She is holding her saber, but in a loose grip, because honestly in an emergency, her spells are much better. She makes sure both her fan and brush are tucked in safely in her belt as she rounds the corner to the antechamber.]
Please get out right now, I don't want to have to kill anyone today.
He had made it look like a spur of the moment decision. Mentioning it casually the Thursday night before, telling Mingyu he was going out of the city for a long weekend to see his aunt at the nursing home she lived at. Then casually asking him if he wanted to come.
It wasn't a casual question. He'd never even brought Jade with him, before, let alone anyone else. Fox was extremely careful about the pieces of his life that could be used to identify him, and even those that knew him best knew nearly nothing about his family or his upbringing, let alone that he had any left alive. His Aunt was his family - though by adoption and not by birth. She was the last thing that remained from his past and someone he protected fiercely.
And he badly, badly wanted her to meet Mingyu.
He knew she wouldn't really retain it. There were days where she didn't even seem to recognize Fox. But it was still important to him. But he approached it casually just so that he wouldn't be too crushed about it if Mingyu said no. He almost expected him to, though he wouldn't be able to explain why. It wasn't anything to do with Mingyu, exactly. The man had never been anything less than supportive. But it was hard for Fox to think that anyone would be interested enough (in a pleasant way rather than a malicious one) to go to all the trouble of actually coming out with him. Especially someone like Mingyu who would have to make arrangements for his absence.
So he still couldn't quite believe it even after they had checked into the bed and breakfast down the street from her facility. Even after they had a really intense night together, and even when he waited lounging in bed as Mingyu fetched the breakfast they were promised. It all seemed a bit like a dream, if he was honest, and he didn't really want to wake up.
He smiled warmly when Mingyu came back, pulling the blankets down to make it easier for him to slide into bed and holding his arms out for the tray.
"Doesn't look quite as good as your cooking, but you know what, I'll take it."
[Just her luck that of course the night she is on call, someone ends up tripping the silent alarm at the main restaurant and she gets the call at 2am and has to leave her friends behind to go and see if it's really something.
She takes her fan just in case, and stops by her apartment to get her cleaver before she remembers it's probably at the restaurant anyway.
By the time she makes it there, she can't find anything wrong with the enchantments and wards. They're still in place, and still behaving the way they should when she comes in, recognizing her as a Clan member as she gets through.
But there's still someone in there. Someone that shouldn't be there.]
Hey. You have two and half minutes to get out because if I don't punch in the code for the alarm in that amount of time, the police will be here by then. I don't want to file a report, and I'd rather tell everyone back home it was a false alarm so let's not make this big, okay?
It didn't take long for Mingyu to arrive, knowing that Fox could take care of himself especially in a place like this where few had reason to wish him ill but worried on a soul deep level all the same. Soon he was jogging up to where Fox stood on the sidewalk waiting for him, wordlessly moving right up to pull Fox into his arms in greeting. He didn't say hello, just held Fox tight for a second before stepping back enough to look at him.
There was a strange, sharp glint of anxiety in his gaze.
"...come on," he murmured, kissing Fox's forehead. "Let's... go home."
[She makes it to the station with a little time to spare, checking her phone as she approaches the turnstile because unless he somehow comes towards her with no cloaking, she won't be able to find him.
It's easy enough for her to look busy on her phone while she waits.]
[Of course, Liushu told Fox about her weird misadventure with that stupid summoning cult and the gorgeous lady who saved her from them. Not like she could have hidden it, she literally blew up a whole building.
But anyway, Naima is really gorgeous and kind and Liushu is feeling fluttery and anxious and confused, and Rushi seems to think she needs to go for it, and she has no idea what to do.
Texting Fox is probably not what she should do. No one said she was smart about these things.]
Hey, Fox, do you
Wait nevermind
I was gonna ask you how you knew you were in love with Mingyu and then I remember it took at least three different people telling you for you to realize.
New best friend!

June 2012, Visiting Fox's Aunt

for mingyu; text, mid june, 4:08 am
did you know that you can combine a fire lighting spell with magnetism and get some really neat jumping static electricity
i think i could probably make a spell that could bridge between magical equipment and mundane tech this way
transfer signals over static
